  Duration: Approx. 4 HOURS.

  The tour will cross the Upper West Side, passing through landmarks such as Saint John the Divine Cathedral (the largest place of worship in the United States and the third largest cathedral in the world), Morningside Heights, Columbia University (one of the eight private Ivy League universities in Northeastern United States), Hamilton Terrace, and finally entering Harlem through the historic district of Sugar Hill in the northern part of Hamilton Heights, consisting of antique wooden row houses and cobblestone streets with coach lights. You will see the legendary Apollo Theatre, the most famous jazz club associated almost exclusively with African-American performers, and a symbol of Black heritage. You will later attend an authentic Baptist mass with Gospel Choir while joining a local church congregation. Clap your hands and experience the wonderful joyous Gospel sounds, intentionally repetitive, spiritual environment, a tradition matured from slave times when blacks were not able to read or take part in the worship, while the hymns of the white master became the backdrop they later used in their choirs. Originally defined as strictly religious, the Gospel genre has moved to the mainstream and has its mark on all other types of music and popular culture.

  THE TOUR STARTS EVERY DAY in front of the Sheraton New York Hotel (811 7th Avenue between 52nd and 53rd Street – by the revolving door) at 9:00 am. (Starting April 1, 2017 the tour will begin at 8:30 am).  The Tour Guide will call your name.
